Tunisia Septoplasty: fixing nasal septum deviation

A septoplasty, also known as functional rhinoplasty, is a specific surgical procedure meant to correct the nasal septum deviation. This intervention is designed for both men and women who suffer the consequences, and the side effects of a deviated nasal septum. The condition may involve medical and / or aesthetic problems. It may cause (stuffy nose, nasal obstruction, snoring, or even sinus and ear infections, severe headache, sleep apnea, chronic exhaustion, etc.).

Tunisia septoplasty is a surgical procedure that reconstructs the septum i.e. the bone and cartilage dividing the nostrils. It is mainly performed for functional reasons to restore a normal respiratory function caused by an obstruction of the nasal airways. If in most cases a nasal obstruction can be a source of discomfort it can sometimes be dangerous in case of sleep apnea. Septoplasty is then HIGHLY recommended to fix the problem and save your life. In most cases, the patients are confused and think that a nose job surgery can solve the problem instead of septoplasty. Fortunately, septorhinoplasty which is a combination of both surgical interventions can be the beast treatment.

Septoplasty, the surgery

The surgery consists on remodeling or partially removing the deformed parts of the nasal septum responsible for the obstruction. Depending on the initial anatomy of the patient, the surgeon can proceed via two incision techniques:

    - an endonasal incision, this approach implies a hidden scar inside the nose.
    - or an external incision, precisely at the base of the nose for more complex deviations.
Once the nasal septum is freed from mucosal and cutaneous attachments, the surgeon proceeds with the partial removal and the remodeling of the deformed parts of the septum.

The procedure ends with a suture and then splints on each side of the septum. In some cases, wicks are needed to limit postoperative bleeding and edema.

In the case of a strongly deviated nose, a septoplasty may be associated with surgical rhinoplasty. A septoplasty lasts between 30 minutes and 1 hour 30. The procedure is generally performed under general anesthesia.

After Septoplasty

septoplasty post-operative follow-up are usually simple. Yet, it is a painful procedure. Postoperative discomfort is mainly related to nasal dressing and wicks. The nasal dressing is kept for about a week while the wicks are removed in the evening or the day after surgery. Short-term discomfort may occur, but it may be limited by appropriate drug therapy.
During the first weeks after the procedure, bruises appear, and the nose remains swollen. The duration of this condition depends on the patient. In the case of an external approach, the nose will be inflated for 15 days before regaining its original shape.

Septoplasty results

Three weeks after the surgery, the patient can breathe easier. During the first month, it is recommended to reduce practicing sport. Then, a normal sport activity would be allowed except sports that involve intense activities, risks of shock on the nose.
Exposure to the sun is possible as soon as the bruises are gone.

Smoking increases the risk of surgical complications of any surgery. Stopping smoking 6-8 weeks before the procedure eliminates this additional risk. If you smoke, talk to your doctor, surgeon, and anesthesiologist.
