Unsatisfied with how your eyes look?

Not everyone is born equal and/ or is blessed with a set of attractive eyes. Some self-conscious individuals are embarrassed about how their eyes look, as many consider large eyes with double eyelids and no eyebags as the gold standard for perfect and gorgeous eyes. Today, cosmetic and plastic surgery has become a widely accepted way for many men and women alike to achieve their own definition of this gold standard.

Many men and women have different natural eyelid conditions, such as absence of bilateral upper eyelid crease, unilateral upper eyelid crease, asymmetrical upper eyelid crease, partial upper eyelid crease, multiple or faint upper eyelid crease or droopy upper eyelid crease.

What can be done?

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty, more commonly known as Asian Blepharoplasty or Double Eyelids Creation blepharoplasty surgery can be performed. There are several ways to create double eyelids, the non-surgical and surgical ways.

The Upper Eyelid

A correction of the upper eyelid especially involves skin removal. This type of blepharoplasty takes an average of one hour and is usually done under local anaesthesia. The incision is made in the fold of the eyelid, so the scar will not be visible. A strip of skin (and sometimes also a piece of the orbicular muscle of the eye) is cut out. Possible fatty tissue at the interior corner of the eye, next to the nose, will also be removed.

The Lower Eyelid

When treating the lower eyelids, the so-called bags under the eyes are the biggest problem. Other methods need to be used: removal of fatty tissue and Hamra's technique. Together with the plastic surgeon you can decide which method would provide the best result for you.

The first possibility involves removing fatty tissue. First of all, the surgeon needs to determine whether the bags under the eyes are indeed caused by excess fatty tissue and not fluid accumulation. Seeing that fatty tissue is constant, it can easily be removed. An oedema, on the other hand, is not constant and can alter from hour to hour. If an excess of fatty tissue causes the bags under the eyes, removal will be done by making an incision just below the eyelashes. Often some skin is removed as well in order to avoid the effect of a "puffy, empty bag" under the eyes. With this type of blepharoplasty, the orbicular muscle around the eye can easily be tightened. This form of blepharoplasty takes about an hour and is usually done under local anaesthesia.

Postoperative care

You should normally be able to go home immediately after the eye lifting. The first few days you regularly need to put cold compresses on and around the eyes, but do avoid immediate contact between eyes and ice. These compresses will help the swelling and possible extravasations to wear off more quickly.

We also recommend you to wear sunglasses during the first week after the eye lifting. The sunglasses protect your eyelids against the light and hide possible extravasation when you walk outside.

The fine stitches will be removed about four to seven days after the eyelid correction. The skin of the eyelid is very thin and heals very quickly. After a few months the scar of the eye lifting will barely be noticeable. The scar of the upper eyelid lies in a natural fold and the scar of the lower eyelid lies just below the eyelashes.

Most people go back to work one week after the eye lifting. One day after the lifting of the upper eyelid you can wear your contacts again, but when your lower eyelid has been corrected you need to wait about a week. Heavy exertions should be avoided during two to three weeks after the surgery. Furthermore, we recommend you to sleep with your head 30 degrees higher during the first couple of days.
